Kisgyalán

The origin of the name is unknown. It first appears around the Middle Ages as Galán, Gyalán, Gyalány. In one Turkish dialect gyalán means a snake so it is very much probable that this was the source of the name during the Osmanic occupation. The original village was stretching about 2 km westwards from the present. It was abandoned during the expulsion of the Turks but resettled in the early 18th century on the eastern hilly border of Somogy county. The adjoining villages are Büssü, Gölle, Fonó and Zimány. The village is surrounded by Hársasi path in the north, Nagyárok in the east, Gázlói-víz in the south and Kerekesi-árok in the west. The outskirts of the village are slopy, hilly, well-yielding clayey earth which determines the occupation of the locals. Unique in the county and a rarity far away is the excentric Neoclassical, apparently circular church. Here we can find the Hársasberki lake, popular among the anglers. The former Festetics Castle in Gázlópuszta can be visited only with a permit of the owner becuse it is a private estate. The former granary was transformed into a guest house.
