Gálosfa

Gálosfa is situated 22 km southwards from Kaposvár, 3 km from the main road to Szigetvár. It does not have a railway stop, it is linked by a public road to the adjoining municipalities. Its climate is influenced by the Mediterranean impact. Due to the hilly area, farming has always been difficult, primarily corn, wheat and barley are grown with good results. The village is mentioned in 1425 as Galusfa as a possession of the abbey in Zselicszentjakab. Flat glass had already been produced in 1798 in Kistótváros and Szentlukapuszta which belonged to Gálosfa. After closing them down they were producing earthen vessels and claypipes, later there was established a porcelain manufacture. This activity was later moved to Pécs and it became the fundament of the Zsolnay factory. The protected Roman Catholic church was built in 1808 in Baroque style. The internal frescos were painted by István Dorfmeister. The Festetics castle was erected in the 18th century in late Baroque style and it was rebuilt in the following century. In the 1990s the castle was renovated and its owners made it an attractive touristic spot. Nowadays it is not opened for visitiors.
